Scrapboy allows access to the scraps and leave "orkuteiros" (Brazilian slang to describe Orkut addicteds) with their hair up (translation of a brazilian expression that means worried)

A new thing is making the mind of the fanatic "orkuteiros" and leaving the more reserved with their hair up. With the launch of the Scrapboy, software developed by the two israelis, Michael Benezra and Assaf Koren, the users of the biggest relationship site on the web are able to exchange messages through an instant communicator, similar to MSN Messenger, without having to log in the Orkut. Up to there, it is alright. The problem is that the program also allows its users to access all the scraps of their friends, independently of them erasing the posts.

When Scrapboy login it imports the contact lists from the site and leave them blocked. From the moment these names are unblocked by the users, the scraps they receive starts to pop on the computer of the friend that likes to take a look at others life. This is very common among boyfriends, girlfriends and exes. It is already been talked about increasing the number of adepts.

The presenter of the sports program Stadium, that happens every sunday on TVE, Cristina Dias, does not aprove the newness. She, who already changed her Orkut configuration andcurrently does not know who gets into her page, believes that this is another way of getting informed of others life.

"It is a huge invasion of privacy. Currently the people are used to erase the scraps they get to make sure the information does not stay there, public. Exchange scraps instantly is very cool, but there shouldn't be the possibility of looking at other peoples exchange." she says.

The actress Juliana Baroni, who is going to give life to Miriam in the remake of "O Profeta", which will substitute "Sinhá Moça" in the Globo TV, is part of the group against this feature. Against the new virtual technologies, the blond thinks about quiting Orkut to prevent from this kind of exposition.

"I am scared because I only get to know this things when some people already use them for years. This is an invasion of privacy, it is an horror. I would never use a program like this to look at others. I don't leave the life of others, I don't have time for that. I don;t know who are these people who are using this feature, but I have other things to do." she says.

According to Felipe Aragao, 21 years, marketing manager of Scrapboy Digital Media Corporation, the intention of the creators is to facilitate the use of Orkut in the exchange of scraps, so that it can be made instantly. Even with the other features, he doesn't believe the use of the software increases the lack of privacy of the "orkuteiros".

"Who wants to damage or know from others people life is able to do it without Scrapboy. Orkut have a choice of message that are not public and no one uses. The charm of scraps is the fact that they are exposed, anyone can read them. The difference is that there is no more necessity of entering the page of people." explains.

More than 80 thousand users

Scrapboy was getting developed since the end of 2005, but the launching was only in may 2006. From that up to now, more than 80 thousand people already use the software in the whole world.

Since the launching until now one update was necessary. Orkut realized some change and they altered the some of the program functionalities. To install Scrapboy all you need is to do the download at the official website, www.scrapboy.com.

xYou can confess: to browse Orkut to read scraps became a mania. If you are one of those people who access the personal page all the time to read your new scraps – or your friends´ scraps – the good news is that Scrapboy was just released, a program that notifies the users about new scraps through instant messages. Inside the application a user can even answer to the scrap without accessing Orkut.

The program, developed by a Canadian company named Scrapboy Media Corporation, can be downloaded for free at the website www.scrapboy.com.

The basic idea of receive instant scraps was from the Israeli Michael Benezra, graduated in Informatics Science for Simon Fraser University, in Vancouver, Canada, who with the partner Assaf Koren, developed the present interface. “We realized how our Brazilian friends were worried in checking their scraps all the time.The opened way how that communicate through scraps is something that would be hard to be accepted for the north Americans, for example”, says Benezra.

The Beta version – kind of test – was releases in mid May and it´s the one available in the market currently. However, Scrapboy Digital Media Corporation is currently developing a new version. “For who already downloaded Scrapboy, the updates will be done automatically", explains the creator.

Discrete Visit. Even though it was release so recently, Scrapboy has already be downloaded for around 50 thousand users from Orkut. Beyond to saving time, the program facilitates the writing of personalized messages, with more simple tool texts available. Another benefit is the possibility to read scraps without the necessity of going to the person´s page. Just Recently Google (Orkut) launched a tool that identifies recent visits. In this way, when the user activate it, it´s possible to know who visited your page and you´re also ‘catched’ in the pages you go through.

Even with the option of deactivate the tool, some people get bothered with the “gossiper”. Because of this, the possibility of reading scraps without being catched is one of the attractions of the program.

According to the company information, around one million users are added to Orkut monthly, what means around 33 thousand users per day.

The Orkut users can keep themselves glad. Scrapboy Digital Media Corporation to compromise to keep the product free. They say the advertisements are responsible for the company profit and, moreover they are making strategical alliances with some providers and advertisers.

How it works

To have yours, just go to the website scrapboy.com and install the program (it doesn’t take more then five minutes). It works exactly like msn. One pop-up shows up at the border page is going to appear always you get a new scrap. When you click on it, it’s going to appear a window with a photo of who sent you the scrap and even the scrap.

Under your photo there’s a space for you to answer. So far it’s already nice because you don’t need to long in the Orkut page to know if you got a message. But it’s not just this. When you download scrapboy, it import, automatically, all your Orkut’s friends. Then you can unblock those ones you’re most interest on and read, on real time, all the scraps they got. Assaf, for example, said he unblocked all his contacts and pop-up windows invade his screen all day. But most of the users unblock just the closest friends. It means you can guard the messages exchange of all your friends (or boyfriend, ficantes*, paqueras*), including those ones who delete the scraps, thinking that like this they can get some privacy.
